In a sign that the ice between CBS and NBC Universal is thawing in the wake of NBC canceling the veteran CBS Studios-produced drama “Medium” in May, CBS has picked up a comedy project from Universal Media Studios headlined and co-created by “Reaper” star Bret Harrison.
The untitled project, which has received a script commitment, marks one of the first forays into television for feature producer Scott Stuber, whose Stuber Prods. has been ramping up TV development during the past several months under former 20th TV comedy head Quan Phung.
The multicamera comedy, based on an original idea by Harrison, revolves around two district attorneys — one in his 20s (Harrison), the other in his 40s — and the woman between them.
“It’s about smart, logical lawyers who realize that logic doesn’t work well in the messy and emotional realities of life,” Harrison said.
Harrison, who got his start in TV series at 18 with a regular role on the sitcom “Grounded for Life,” said he had been looking to do a buddy comedy and took the idea to Phung, with whom he had worked on several series including “Life” and “The Loop.”
Robert Borden is writing the script for the project based on a story he co-wrote with Harrison.
For Borden, who co-created “George Lopez,” the comedy is one of the projects under a premium two-project script deal with NBC. The other, “Outsourced,” is an NBC/UMS comedy he is executive producing with Ken Kwapis.
Stuber’s next film is “Love Happens,” which opens Sept. 18.
On the big screen, Harrison next appears in “Mardi Gras.”
